Removal of a Dislocated Ganciclovir (Vitrasert) Implant

Posted By: Eric Jung on June 19, 2024
The Vitrasert is a sustained-release ganciclovir implant that was surgically implanted for the treatment of CMV retinitis. These large intravitreal devices can dislocate and cause symptomatic visual obstruction - sometimes more than a decade after the initial implantation. Here we remove a dislocated Vitrasert implant from the eye. This case highlights the importance of creating an appropriately large wound for implant removal in a safe and efficient manner.
